El Segundo, Calif. – July 11, 2017 – The City of El Segundo, today announced the opening of the Chan Soon-Shiong Institute for Medicine (CSSIFM) in El Segundo, California. This new cancer center offers state-of-the-art diagnostics and treatment, with a dedicated team of experienced medical professionals who are committed to providing personalized immunotherapy care.
“Los Angeles is a region so rich in medical and scientific talent – we have attracted some of the most experienced clinical scientists to deliver next generation cancer care, ” said Patrick Soon-Shiong, MD, founder of NantWorks. “Today’s opening of the Chan Soon-Shiong Institute for Medicine here in El Segundo reflects our commitment to bringing forth powerful, advanced care for cancer patients. We believe that 21st century treatment of patients with cancer does not need to be toxic or painful, and metastases does not need to be fatal. The paradigm of high dose chemotherapy and debilitating high dose radiation must be changed as the standard of care, and this state of the art center will enable clinicians to validate treatment approaches that protect rather than harm the patient’s immune system. We have to harness the most powerful defense against this deadly disease: the body’s own immune system,” he said.
“We are pleased to welcome the Chan Soon-Shiong Institute for Medicine to El Segundo,” said Suzanne Fuentes, Mayor of the City of El Segundo. “We are confident that the addition of this cancer center will contribute greatly to our city’s mission in advancing technology and innovation. It has been an honor working with a visionary like Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong and the CSSIFM team to open this cancer center, which will provide our community with access to the most advanced personalized cancer care.”
“Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. With this deadly disease impacting millions of people each year, our goal at the Chan Soon-Shiong Institute for Medicine is to deliver unique natural killer cell and immunologically based treatment to our patients,” said Lennie Sender, MD, co-director of CSSIFM. “We understand that every patient responds to treatment differently, making it essential for us to provide personalized treatment options for each patient. The Chan Soon-Shiong Institute for Medicine’s team of expert oncologists are armed with next-generation clinical research, natural killer cell therapy, virus vaccines and the most comprehensive molecular diagnostics available in order to make the most molecularly informed treatment decisions for the patient.”
“We will be enrolling patients immediately into our Nant Pancreatic Cancer vaccine trial and into other tumor types to follow shortly thereafter. To our knowledge these trials will be the first in the nation to combine low dose chemo-radiotherapy with natural killer cell and fusion proteins to activate the patient’s immune system”, said Dr. John Lee, the surgical co-director of CSSIFM.
El Segundo was strategically chosen to be the home of the CSSIFM. El Segundo offers convenient access to transportation to serve patients from throughout the region. Additionally, it is a short distance from Los Angeles International Airport, providing convenience to out-of-town patients seeking next generation immunotherapy cancer care.
